I would compare it too a football (US buddies read: soccer) match.
NW would be the quality of play, ball possession, succesfull passes etc.
But the goals are the planets in IC.
In the end, you win the game by goals, and IC with planets. You can get them in dirty ways, but they still count.
NW is a means to express the control of the game, great infra and large armies is a measure, but it’s not what wins you the game.
Hence I say, they both matter, but what determines the winner of a round in my view, is EOR planets.
Don’t think i’d surprise anyone if I said I actually agree 100% with @otteN although not the bubble part! =P
I think I showed NW didn’t matter when I beat Scorp, Devilz, Pitbull, Colorado, GxReborn, Whiteheaven and others in 2016, when in a 4 man fam, vs fams with max 12 players and under 3vs1/4vs1 having bankers without opp defense, with out fleet/only retake fleets and whooped all their buts and won size. For the ones who don’t know, we managed to do all above…with Artic being 25% of my fam and on paper half of the attacking force… Kenny, Robert & Jon are all still awesome!
You can have inflated NW due to pop nw, rcp nw, having to much infra, too many bombers, transports, wizards, agents, since it is actual fleet and what’s being done with is what matters…resulting in size at end of round.
PS. I hate redness during tick and refuse to donate! Make it a green Patreon button and I might be persuaded
Yeah, there’s a clear preference for size-only over nw-only, but it’s by no means a consensus, especially considering the “both” votes.
It’s a limited sample, but this matches up with my own observations over the years. The claim that “everybody agrees size is the real measure” falls short.
To say it another way: just barely half of the polled players think size is the true measure, which doesn’t support the idea of a size win being the “real” win.
In football you also have people saying: but they play a boring game, they play only defense and unattractive football etc. and we are just unlucky but play gorgeous football so we’re the better team.
half is quite a lot
Also: take into account you didn’t ask people to vote what the real measure for the win is. You asked for what is the important measure for skill in the rankings.
If you want to know what people think should determine the real EOR family win, maybe make a poll for that?
I reckon quite some of the ‘both’ voters will vote for size.
Half is very much a lot. But it is hardly a clear consensus.
You make a good point about the wording of the question, but even forcing a “both” voter to choose one is a loaded question. Some players, myself included, don’t believe that there is a single winner.
That’s my point to begin with: “size is the real winner” is a flawed premise to me, but not because I think nw is. Rather, I think both are equally valid.
So the real winner of the round would be the family that placed the highest in both categories.
If ranked 1st in nwth but 3rd in size and another family finishes 2nd in nwth 2nd in size or 1st in size there tottal ranking would be higher.
This is the way ive always truly viewed it but most players go by size since anyone can do an eor jump
Sidenote:
As an attacker, family size was what mattered to me personally. However, those that saved for NW jumps instead of actually respecting the very title of the game – IMPERIAL CONFLICT – well, they are entitled to consider themselves winners too. Just don’t ever expect me to respect them for what I personally view as hollow victories.
I can’t remember the round or my family’s name but we finished first in size by a pretty wide margin and had a lot of wars and fought the number 2 sized family at the eor and we finished 6th in nw. That round we fought all 5 of the top 5 finishing families in nw and won all 5 wars. So in my opinion size is the true winner.
But how ic is now a days I defiantly consider nw a lot more. Still think size is the winner but if you look at mw did 31 really even have a true war? If they finished second or third in size but won nw I would say they were the winners anyways
I used to remember when nearing the end of the round, attackers going on a mass planet grab, if you were unfortunate you could easily lose 50 or so planets in an evening but on the flip side if you had a good attacking fam you could easily jump your n/w purely by snatching planets. I used to love the free for all at the end of the round.
