IC Tourney 2018

You’re right, I should rephrase that to: I find playing solo rather boring (which I tested in Supernova) ;p

Supernova too lacks any kind of race-strategy etc. Which there is still kind of compensated by allowing ‘alliances’, so between ‘fams’ you still play strategy (kind of hidden family concept). in the 1 on 1 it will be totally gone.

@Hala, this isn’t creating another Galaxy, this is a tournament, you can’t compare supernova to 1v1, it’s completely different, if you want to play in a family, play mw, if you want to test your personal skills and knowledge against other players then sign up for the tourney!

Races will definitely still play a part in 1v1 with custom races.

U drunk homie? :joy:

Not drunk at all - silly and sligtly childish comment…

Maybe I should clarify that, I was referring to playing roles.

The only skill you test in a 1v1 comment is SS-infra strategy skills. There’s only one opponent - countdown to attack and whoever beats that, wins the 1v1.

Also - no race strategy comment came from the fact people up here were suggestion Qezians. If all players play Qezians - the race factor is gone. Meaning, the 1v1 is basically an infra battle/race (outside of a very small part you may play with some hiding of fleet, and staggered triggering or so, but I dismiss that as it won’t work with two decent players against each other).

Anyways - that’s my opinion - please go ahead and have fun with the 1v1 competition.

Yeah, I’ve come to agree that qezians is a cop out, so we are looking at going custom races only, I think that’s the best option.

so when does this tourney start? I want in. :sun_with_face:

Hopefully soon. We just completed a Test Round and are working out the matchup details now.

So after some discussion and reflection on the test round, we have a few updates:

Format

We’re going to go with groups and single elimination finals. The link above has more detail per @Random and and @Suicidal_Sushi, but the summary is that this format will reduce the luck factor and through grouping and multiple matches per empire ensure that skill comes out on top.

Map

overview

The key feature here is that the map is mirrored diagonally, so each competing pair will have identical starting positions. This is another way that we’ll reduce the effect of luck.

Each system will have 3 planets, which comes out to an average of about 100 planets across 30 systems per empire.

This map will be re-used for each match, though the planet sizes and bonuses will still be randomized within each galaxy and also between each galaxy.

Races

We’re going to limit it to only custom races. No standards allowed. This will ensure all players are competing with the same amount of race points.

Time

Each round will be 3 RL days at 15 minute ticks. This will give some time for rest between groups of matches.

Next Steps

We’ll be working out the initial matchups and getting in touch with those who signed up. Details are for the most part finalized, and we’ll have more match specifics posted when we actually open up the galaxies.

nicer Pie good job guy

Nice work Pie,

Although Pie will supply more details, anyone wanting to partake should be willing to commit to 3 consecutive weekends just to fulfill the group stages of this tournament. Beyond that if you progress you will need to factor in another 2-3 weekends depending on how Pie sets things up.

You’ll understand why when Pie has time to get the finer details produced.

Oh and btw, anyone want to start up a side thread giving fictitious odds on who may do well in groups and who may win and so on? In a way a IC Tournie PvC.

Obviously to early to say anything, but if someone wants to do it, it could make for some fun reading and opinions. Tempted to tell Pie to fix a group so Swagga, WhiteShadow and ICD are all in the same group just for the entertainment value :stuck_out_tongue:

I believe some sort of seeding would be ideal rather than random placement. There is little way of knowing who is actually the top and last seed etc but I believe it could be done somewhat decently and prevent the potential for 1 or 2 groups to get the top talent and ruin the idea of the groups.

I am probably about an 8 or 9 seed…

I think groups should be done based on timezone

That will work for the start pickle but once we get to finals it may not be feasable, but we can definitely try our best on both suggestions, thanks hydro.

So this means there’s two groups of 3-4 and one final between the winner of each? I could have sworn I remembered more than 8 people wanting to take part in this.

3 days is a really long time for each round. I think a lot will come down to who can just not leave or sleep for that long consistently. Seeding is probably very inaccurate unless you know who’s going to be able to be around more than others. With only two groups, the chances of having all the “best” players land in the same group is pretty unrealistic, especially given that anyone who signs up is probably more than competent. I could obviously be totally wrong about this if a ton of noobs sign up, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

I like the mirrored map and forcing custom races. Hopefully there’s a way to hide the race from at least your opponent, but ideally from everyone so there can’t be any copycatting. I would love to get groups based on timezone to be able to negotiate planned/forced sleeping times.

There’s approx 16 signups atm.
Seeding is relative and could be very biased, a random draw will probs be best really, because the best person ‘should’ win no matter the draw.

As for time to sleep and stuff, naps are still a thing, a 24 hour nap is 6 hours real time, diplomacy is a part of being a great player too

And finally, @I_like_pie will have to answer about blocking out races, that was something I thought of in the test round as I was asleep for sor and didn’t want xenon to pull a dodgy race change on me lol.

Seeding and location grouping are both good ideas but also come with their own challenges.

For seeding, as @HydroP mentioned, there’s no real way to evaluate skill. In a way that’s what this tourney will show us. We could guess, but our biases and limited data on this would make for pretty dubious results.

Location based grouping does make sense initially, but regional mismatches are inevitable. Even if we get regional finalists, players will eventually have to compete against somebody from a different timezone. That would make the initial matches more balanced than successive matches.

In a weird way, not taking location into account will be more balanced in that the problem will exist consistently throughout the tournament.

We’re planning for an initial 4 groups, but this might change due given that we’re going to extend signups. We never announced this properly so now that we’re wrapping up details we’ll wanna do the usual promo stuff (forum/chat announcements, fb posts, etc).

This is a problem we face generally. The good thing about faster ticks though is that even just managing yourself becomes difficult to keep up with, which means comebacks can actually be easier than in a regular game. It’s harder to keep an advantage, which hopefully will offset the activity problem.

Also, @Random has a great point about diplomacy. It does get tiring, and knowing that you and your enemy can both benefit from some kind of sleep will make an agreement mutually beneficial. Time to test those diplo chops!

We won’t be hiding races; there’s no code to support it but I think it’d be a bad move anyway. Evaluating and exploiting your enemy’s weak points is part of the game.

I wouldn’t hide the races anyway, just because someone copies it or adds something to exploit it doesn’t mean they are capable of doing so.

Will there be morale? Will ops be limited by morale, the 7 limit, or nothing?

Seeding becomes easy after the first tourney because you can place everyone based on yhe results. However, I feel that attempting to seed anyways will make it more entertaining and I am sure that the top 8 will be fairly accurate with maybe a dark horse or two lower down.
