40 years of not committing a crime isn’t evidence that one never happened. It helps his case yes, but is not itself proof that the claimant is lying.
Besides, you just said you wouldn’t care even if he is guilty. If that is true then that means you’d be fine with having an attempted rapist on the court. Is that not accurate? It’s your own statement.
That’s a fair question. I don’t think that’s who he is now, no. However, I do think it affects his qualifications.
Consider that if he did do this, and was never punished (attempted rape is a crime) then his personal experience with and perception of justice is tainted. Attempted rape isn’t a traffic violation, despite some people playing down the significance of the possibility.
People keep talking about 36 years in the context of Kavanaugh, but what about the same 36 years in the context of Ford? If this did happen, and he did attempt to rape her, surely that also affected her life in a significant way?
If this all is true, isn’t it a perversion of justice that somebody who attempted to rape another person never faced any consequences and went on to become a judge in the highest court? That doesn’t seem at all wrong to you?
Again, this is all hypothetical. But, assuming the possibility, would you really think he’s still qualified for such an esteemed role?
@HydroP rankly I don’t think somebody who has ever attempted to rape someone should serve on the supreme court, regardless of how long ago it was and regardless of who they are now. These people arguably hold more power than any president ever has, and having the highest moral standard should be a prerequisite.
@WhiteShadow if waiting until this exact moment to come forward makes all these women liars how do you feel about everyone who came forward last month saying they were sexually assaulted by members of the clergy - some up to 60 years prior? Are they all liars because they didn’t tell the police the moment it happened?
I would personally like to see Supreme Court appointments have nothing to do with the president. As it is, the president can choose anyone he wants for any reason. There is a confirmation, but still, the point of having three branches of government is balance. The president making a nomination, in my mind, upsets that balance. I have no proposal as to how it should be done, just that the president should stay out of it.
I am not sure how I feel about this “#metoo” movement. Women who make accusations are readily believed, but as a male survivor of intimate partner violence, I know from both personal experience and from other men that this is completely one-sided. There is a massive imbalance in society’s understanding of the true scope of domestic and intimate partner violence.
I think if someone has been molested, harassed or raped by a public figure, and the accusation is sincere, the first thing to do is file a police report within the statute of limitations. If it’s outside of that statute, it becomes a big “he said, she said.” I agree, though, that if someone throws reasonable doubt into the moral qualifications of one of the highest public office candidates in the land, a level-headed investigation is warranted in order to ensure that our justice system remains intact.
Nothing and no one is perfect, but it’s important that we all at least try to ensure that certain standards are upheld so that we continue to have a functioning democratic society.
After watching Kavanaugh blatantly lie while under oath about the meanings of “Devils Triangle” and “boofing” and then refusing to say he would back an FBI investigation to clear his name, I feel much more confident that he is lying about Ford.
Devils Triangle is a drinking game? Come on… you can just google what that means (wont post definition here)
Boofing = farting? Also something you can easily google the definition of (wont post definition here) … He wrote in his buddies yearbook “Have you boofed yet?” Really? We are supposed to believe he was asking his buddy if he had farted yet? That makes no sense.
I think lying to the senate council under oath should automatically disqualify him from the Supreme Court.
I’m feeling about the same. I was giving him the benefit of the doubt but the one that struck me was when he was asked if he is the “Bart O’Kavanaugh” character from Mark Judge’s book, and couldn’t give a simple yes or no response. Instead he gave a smug “You’ll have to ask him”, knowing that it won’t happen.
Slimy.
It also pissed me off when he responded to Klobuchar’s question about being black out drunk by turning it around and her if she had ever been black out drunk. She isn’t the one facing accusations. This is beyond arrogant and disrespectful to the people rightfully doing their job by vetting the position.
Accusations aside, we could do better than this guy.
Bill Cosby is a convicted sexual offender with little to no evidence on 40year old case.
Donald Trump is on video saying grab’em by the p***y, and bragging about sexually assaulting victims. And he’s President of the United States of America.
Then there’s the Producer guy Harvey Winestein who hasn’t gone to trail yet.
So it’s no big surprise, this Brett Kavanaugh guy. America’s Sexism & Racism is Showing.
Just goes to show what’s at the bottom of Trump Swamp.
i think the US has lost alot trust in the world, since its run by deep state, military industrial complex and big oil and turns out to be a big, cheap hollywood show, when u now destroy the last line of defence, the independent justice by letting in people like that guy above then all my respect is gone (well has gone longer time ago, since bush jun.)
I don’t think most US citizens care what the rest of the world thinks about us in that regard. Yes, our government is screwed up and if the US politicians spent their time doing their job instead of fighting each other we would be better off.
